How to Become a Pilates Instructor in Ireland in 2026 (and What Most Trainings Will Not Tell You)

A no-fluff guide for yoga teachers, fitness instructors, and dedicated pilates students considering the jump to teaching. Qualifications, costs, realistic earnings, mat vs reformer — and the four mistakes that send most new instructors back to teaching part-time.

Pilates is the fastest-growing fitness format in Ireland right now. Reformer studios are opening in every major town, mat classes are at capacity, and qualified instructors are in genuine short supply. The question is no longer “is there work for new pilates teachers?” — it is “how do you become one without wasting €3,000 on the wrong training?”

If you are reading this, you have probably been thinking about teaching for a while. Maybe you taught yoga and want to add a new modality. Maybe you are a long-time pilates student your teacher keeps telling to qualify. Maybe you are looking for a meaningful second career that does not require a 3-year retraining. Whatever the path in, the questions are the same.

This guide is written by a course provider. We will be upfront about that. The goal is to give you the honest version first, and let you decide whether what we offer fits at the end.

1. The qualification you actually need

In Ireland, there is no legal minimum qualification to teach pilates. In practice, every reputable studio, insurance provider, and corporate wellness client requires a REPs Ireland accredited Pilates Matwork qualification at Level 4. For reformer, you need the additional REPs Ireland Reformer Instructor qualification on top.

The REPs Ireland approved provider register is published at repsireland.ie. If a course is not on that list, your qualification will not let you get insured, will not let you teach in any reputable studio, and will not transfer to the UK or EU.

2. Mat vs Reformer — which to start with

Mat is always the starting point. You cannot get a REPs-approved Reformer Instructor qualification without first qualifying in Mat. That is the rule across every provider in Ireland.

The real question is whether to do them back-to-back as a combined pathway or do mat first, work for 12 months, then come back for reformer. Both work. The combined pathway is faster to a dual-qualified income; the staged approach lets you earn while you study for the reformer add-on.

Important note: Image Pilates is currently the only REPs Ireland approved Reformer Instructor course in the country. Other reformer trainings exist but are not on the REPs register, which limits their professional recognition.

3. What it really costs in 2026

The honest range across REPs Ireland approved providers in 2026 is €1,600 to €3,200 for a combined Mat + Reformer qualification. Mat-only sits at €1,600–€1,895. Reformer add-on or combined sits at €2,200–€2,800. Full business / studio packages run to €3,200.

Image Pilates starts at €1,800 (The Cert, Mat only), with €300 deposit and monthly payment plans from €450/month. Up to €1,000 off via Intreo if you are on social welfare.

4. Year-one earnings — what is realistic

Class rates in Ireland in 2026 typically run:

A typical year-two teacher running 12–18 weekly classes plus a small private book clears €40,000–€55,000 self-employed. Dual-qualified Mat + Reformer teachers consistently outperform mat-only by 20–35% in hourly rate.

5. The 4 mistakes that stall most new instructors

  1. Qualifying mat-only and assuming reformer can wait. By the time you come back for reformer, studios near you have hired someone dual-qualified.
  2. Choosing a non-REPs reformer training. Cheaper upfront, but you cannot teach in any insured studio. You will end up re-qualifying.
  3. Underpricing yourself in year one. Most new teachers quote €25/hour because they feel new. Studios pay the going market rate regardless — undercharging just leaves money on the table.
  4. Not getting into a studio network early. The fastest path to a full schedule is teaching in 2–3 studios while you build your private book. Solo-private-only routes take much longer to fill.
“The qualification gets you taught. The studio network gets you booked. Most providers only do the first half.”

6. How to pick the right training for you

Once you have ruled out non-REPs providers, the real decision is between scope (mat only vs combined), delivery format (weekend vs evening vs online-blended), payment terms, and post-qualification support (does the provider help you find paid teaching slots after you qualify?).
